The Natural History Museum of LA describes the Mamane tree as follows:

A tall forest tree in dry regions or a small shrub in the alpine areas, the "mamane" occurrs on all the islands except Molokai. Its hard, durable wood is used in making fence posts and was formerly utilized by the Hawaiians for sled runners and farmer's spades. At lower elevations flowering is in the early spring month, but in the alpine areas it is delayed until early summer."
